Since I pick up this island based on various discussions on different forums, I promises that ,as soon as I come back, I will write a review with all details and facts someone should like to know before picking up Sun Island Resort as a destination among many Maldivian resorts . As I'm coming from Montenegro, also very beautiful country on the coast of fantastic Adriatic sea, I think I have competence to write this review for such a fantastic destination . Here are my thoughts :Read full review
We decide to go on this arrangement in organization of Travel House agency from Belgrade,Serbia, and after all, I can say 10+ for organization. They are working in cooperation with German popular tour operator Dertour, so representative of Dertour was waiting for us upon our arrival in Male ( capitol of Maldives). As she was staying on the island, we always had opportunity to ask her for any kind of help or advice, which were quiet useful. So all was perfect
As I pointed above, as soon as we arrived on Male airport, Dertour representative was waiting for us and organize our transportation with smaller plane to Sun Island resort. Literary, it took us only 15min to switch on a smaller plane ( not a hydro plane) and took off for our resort. The flight lasted 20 minutes after we landed in Mamagili, small island with runaway for small planes. From Mamagili we have been transported by boat to our island ( 15minutes also). Upon our arrival, in a reception lobby, small refreshment were given to us ( coconut water, small towels...) which was very nice. After 5 minutes we received key for our superior beach bungalow ( It was number 202, just as we wanted, to be close to our restaurant, main bar, reception lobby and the main beach). On of the best location for island, warmly recommended ( honestly, I picked it up by experience of other people what I found on the forums).
Superior beach bungalow is quiet comfortable, it's about 26-30 square meters. I would say it is not 5 star , rather it's a 4 star which we really didn't mind as this was last on our list of priorities when we decided to go on such a vacation. You have a very specious room with big bed, small minibar and safe, with old fashioned TV but variety of TV channels ( sports, movies and news) which was real great if you want ,before sleeping, to watch some movie or football game or so. No internet in the room at all which I also liked as , knowing myself, I would spend a lot of time online when I'm in the room. The bathroom is very big and from inside bathroom you have door to outside bathroom which I really liked ( the fact I can take shower under stars). Every day you get 2 bottles of water ( 1,5 liters per person) and also instant coffee with coffee maker as well. Outside of the bungalow you have a small patio with 2 chairs and small table so you can drink a coffee in the morning with view on beautiful colors of the sea. Bungalow is located 15meters from the beach and sea, and white sand starts just in front of it which is really nice. In front of it you have 2 sun beds with room number on those. We initially wanted to go for water bungalows, and the plan was to upgrade our beach bungalow to water one, just because I got advice from person who was on this island year ago to go for beach one rather than water villa. When we finally went to water villas and spotted environment and everything, we really figured out that, in case of Sun Island Resort, beach bungalows ( specially ones from #180-210) are better located and more functional than water villas. Plus quality of beach and swimming areas are much better. So my recommendation goes for superior beach bungalows ( room numbers 180-210).
4.Food/drinks and other services
We subscribed for full board meaning all 3 meals but no drinks included. If you decide to go for all inclusive, you will pay higher price but, as you will read from all reviews, it's not worthy as you have restricted variety of free drinks and also places on island. So full board is probably best solution as food on island is expensive in other restaurants ( Italian and Thai ). Food is also something which is not important neither for me or my wife, but we really enjoyed in variety of fruits, vegetables, soups, pasta and salads. Even if you are the most picky one, you will find what you like. So food is great. Cocktails and other drinks are offered in every café on island, prices are from 4$ per bottle of water , 6$ sodas and beer, and 10-20$ for cocktails. Other service is also great, you have couple bars and cafés where you can have a drink, coffee or even an ice-cream. Free wireless is in Vani coffee shop ( very next to main restaurant ) and also in golf bar on the way to spa and water villas.
We stayed for 10nights and, to be honest, never feel bored or such. So many things you can do on island . Lot of excursions ( visiting other islands, sunrise and sunset fishing, diving, snorkeling, sharks and stingrays feeding, all possible watersports, the greatest SPA center ever, bicycle rent which is a must, crab race, etc...). Also you have all sports like tennis, basketball, billiard, table tennis,football,etc...We rented bikes for 6 days which was great as we managed to explore whole island very fast and it was fun. Island is 1,5km long and 500m wide, you would say it's small but it is one of the biggest on Maldives. We had a lot of walk but also we had fun riding bicycles all around islands.
SPA is one of the best I have ever seen and very nice and beautiful, looks like you are in the middle of jungle, with palm trees and vegetation all around you. Loabi loabi massage is great and it's for couples, kind of expensive (220$) but it's really worth. My wife also had some other face massages, she is thrilled with service there. Big recommendation. Diving and snorkeling is must as you could not imagine what colors of fishes you can see in the water, simply unbelievable. Pretty much , all excursions off the island are around 50$ in average per person, so it's not cheap , but hardly expected something very affordable on such a prestige resort.
As I have seen and read lot of discussions on forums about what is the best time to go on Maldives, I realized the temperature is pretty much the same all over the year ( from 28-30C). Lot of people say the best time for Maldives is from November till March when is no rain season and such. Consider that in this time of year prices are much higher and the island is more crowded. I went on September 6th and we stayed till September 16th, which , as per forums, should be a rain season. From all 10 days, we experienced rain one afternoon and one night, and one cloudy day. All the rest was clear sky, lot of sun, even more than enough for my taste. Sun is strong as Maldives are close to Equator, so make sure to bring lot of sun creams with higher factors for skin protection. We actually already have darker color as we live in a sea country, but still first couple days we had some troubles with strong sun. As I spoke to local guys, there is no right time for Maldives, weather is great all over the year, so don't worry what other say or write on forums. September should be one of the worst month to go there due to the weather conditions, but I couldn't have imagine better weather conditions.
Island is very nice with lot of vegetation and palm trees, very clean and very well maintained. Long beaches with white white sand, color of the see is amazing. Even beaches which are naturally very clean are cleaned all the time from leafs, so corrals or some other vegetation. It is really nice, as I got feeling they take care about every flower, every tree, grass and etc...
All in one, this was wonderful romantic vacation for me and my wife, it's a small paradise in the heart of Indian ocean. It's impossible to describe how beautiful and amazing are these islands, one should go there at least once in a life. Sun Island Resort is also fantastic place, full of nice people who help you to feel very special on this unforgivable place. If you will ever have opportunity to go there, never think twice, just grab it !!!

The staff was very friendly and helpful from the beginning. We received our room with reef view really fast. The luggage were transferred to room automatically. The room was cleaned 2 times a day (in the morning and evening). We gladly provided some tips from time to time.
The food was awesome judging by quantity, variety and quality. You can feel the real taste of pineapple and coconuts. There are many sorts of cookies with each meal. One thing I didn't like was the taste of water.
There are a lot of activities you can do : water sports, renting bike, snorkeling, diving, trips to other islands, feeding sting rays and sharks etc. You can choose to have a lazy vacation as well, by relaxing all day by the pool or on one of the beautiful beaches, around the island.
We were lucky with the weather, as we only got one day of rain (and a couple of showers in some other 2 days). Sunscreen with big protection is a must, as the sun is much stronger than it is in Europe, for instance.
Snorkeling kit is nice to have, as you will discover that the marine life is excellent. We took the "reef explorer" trip witch totally worth it, as we could see even grater marine life (corals and fishes).
Although, a little expensive, the spa is incredible. I would say : 5 stars services.
The overall impression was a very good one. They really know how to make tourism and you feel special. The island itself is outstanding beautiful, I would say it is even nicer than it looks in pictures. The exotic vegetation, the wonderful beaches, the white sand, the light-blue water, the diverse fauna... are really, really great.
It was a dream come true for us. We will definitely go back to Maldive some day, to relive this experience.
Sun Island Resort & SpaWonderful service, good hotel, more like 4 stars rather than 5.A bit too far from Male which involves additional flight and it's tiring. Another problem of this Island...Wonderful service, good hotel, more like 4 stars rather than 5.A bit too far from Male which involves additional flight and it's tiring. Another problem of this Island is a valuable amount of big scary spiders and other insects as well as various sharks, sting rays and jelly fishes that are simply dangerous. All inclusive doesn't include everything at all, even simple coffee or beer in some places on the Island are not free for all inclusive meal plan. Have to spend a good sum of money there anyway, to every payment hotel adds 10% and 6% which makes that sum even bigger.Read full review

The staff are friendly and hard working and plenty o do on this island. If you are are a Brit then you will be in the minority here, I'd say 90% of the tourists here are Russian and 90% of them didn't respect the Maldivian culture. They went topless, we're rude and drank so much alcohol there wasn't really much left for us. We flew with First choice and although we were promised a seaplane on booking we got a 3hr speedboat trip really long and tiring after a 13 hr flight. On the way home we got the seaplane and it was amazing. On the boat we had a whole hour of seeing nothing else but sea! The islands all inclusive is best option but watch out for hidden extras including the mini bar even though same drinks are free in the restaurant. The flight home was horrendous they didn't have any water all the way home! 13 hours of drinking tea/cola was awful we all got headache! So 5/5 for scenery 5/5 for staff and clenlness, 5/5 for shark feeding, manta rays and excursions 0/5 for first choice. 2/5 for food and all inclusive and 5/5 for the spa - best spa I've ever been to.Read full review
