My husband and I spent 4 nights at the resort between 21 and 25 November 2012 so have only just returned. Let us begin by saying that the resort is stunning. We spent the first day sitting by the pool remarking on how beautiful the resort is. We have been to many beautiful places in the world and stayed at first-class hotels and we agreed very quickly that there was nowhere more beautiful that we had been to. Within hours at the resort we were already planning returning with our children next year. The comments we have to make about this resort are therefore not about the standard of the hotel/resort itself; they are instead about the standard of the service.
The service is generally quite poor, the staff are inadequately trained and the vast majority of them appear downright miserable and bored. Their attitude rubs off on you quite quickly and by the second day we had had enough, such that we spent a good part of our time at the pool reading tripadvisor comments to see if others had had a similar experience. To be fair, the reviews have been quite mixed; some have clearly been overwhelmed by the quality of the resort and service, but where there have been negative comments they have almost exclusively related to the poor service. For those who have stayed at other similar resorts throughout the world, this resort will likely not meet the standards you have come to expect when paying such high rates for a hotel/resort.
On our first night at the hotel, we tried the Japanese restaurant. We arrived and were escorted to a table for two which we did not like; it was looking out over a very dark ocean with no fellow diners nearby. We asked to be moved to a different table (ie closer to the action) and our request was met by the maitr'd with a "humph", a pause and a reluctant "err, ok then". We then waited 5 minutes while she cleared the spare place-settings (it was a table for 4) with her not saying a single word. We then waited another 10 minutes to receive any attention from a waiter, finally managed to order a bottle of wine (which they did not have) and waited a further 10 minutes to receive a menu (after attracting the attention of a different waiter). We were then told they didn't have avocado or toro (fatty tuna). When the waiter came he knocked over a bottle of dipping sauce over several of the dishes.
One thing we quickly noticed about the people who work at the resort is that they don't seem to enjoy working there. They seem miserable. They rarely smile. There is no response at all to the "thank you" they receive when they pour water for you or deliver a dish to the table. We didn't have any conversations with the staff until after we had complained about the service. When you do manage to attract their attention to place an order, 5 minutes later someone else will come over and ask you if you want to order. A further 5 minutes and someone else again will ask you again if you want to order. The same will happen when you appear to have finished a dish and they want to clear the table. There is no real communication between the waiting staff or "ownership" of a table; during the course of a meal, you will likely interact with 5 or so different waiters/waitresses repeating the same thing time and time again. It's all very amateur and annoying. Something you can accept if paying for a 3 star hotel, but this place is incredibly expensive and we should be able to expect the best.
One afternoon we arrived at the pool, sat down on the sun loungers and waited for someone to bring us some towels. After 20 minutes we managed to attract the attention of one of the pool guys and asked him if we could get some towels. He pointed over to an area by the pool and told us we "could get them over there". We are not lazy people by any means, but we have never had that kind of service at any other hotel/resort that claims to be 6 star. On another day, we were the first people to arrive at the pool after an early breakfast. We helped ourselves to towels and it took almost two hours to receive the welcome basket (well after others who arrived much later than us had received theirs).
The resort is not cheap by any means and that was something we expected. However, one thing that always annoys us is waiting staff pushing the sale of bottled water. It's such a rip-off that we rarely order bottled water in restaurants and instead ask for iced water. At Reethi Rah you can have Evian for USD12 or USD14 (I cannot recall) or Reethi's own water (whatever that means) for USD4. In other words, you cannot get iced (tap) water for free despite it being perfectly drinkable. Waiters have clearly been told to sell as much bottled water as they can. It's really quite irritating.
It took us a good 15 minutes just to book two massages as the spa receptionist was so incompetent. They were completely inflexible when we tried to change one of the masseuses for our second massage as it was "already booked and in the system".
One evening I was not feeling well and we cancelled our restaurant reservation and ordered room service. The quality of the food was poor (as a general comment, some of the food we had at the resort was outstanding, but some was mediocre). What really annoyed us, however, was that we decided to order one of the resort's DVDs and it took 3 phone calls and over 45 minutes for the DVD to arrive and when it did we were too tired to watch it!
We appreciate that all of the above may seem quite trivial but when you are paying so much for this resort you really should be able to expect the best service. The main issue was really the lack of friendliness and warmth of the staff. One previous reviewer commented on here that they had heard that there are morale issues as staff are treated so badly. I don't know whether that's true or not, but it would explain their general carefree attitude. It's a real shame that the poor service has let this hotel/resort down, as it is a stunning property and, to be fair, when we complained, the service improved noticeably immediately so they clearly took on board our comments. However, the improvement did not seem natural. One of the pool guys was clearly assigned to stand near our sun loungers and ask us every 15 minutes if he could get us anything. Everyone was clearly on their best behaviour all of a sudden and, from my conversation with the General Manager, I am 100% convinced that he did not perceive there to be service issues; just a few annoying guests that had to be dealt with as best they could to avoid further complaints or negative comments on tripadvisor. As soon as we left, we are sure that all of the staff we encountered will revert to their "couldn't care less" attitude. We will certainly not be going back. In fact, we have already booked the Four Seasons where the service is almost always first-class. The owners of Reethi Rah will benefit from sending their senior management (including the General Manager) for a stay at the Four Seasons so they can see how a 5/6 star hotel should really be run and ensure their staff (of which there is no shortage) are properly trained. If the staff are properly trained and more friendly, and the quality of the food is a little more consistent, this resort would definitely merit the "excellent" tripadvisor rating.

We have stayed in many top hotels around the world, including other O&O resorts, but there is no doubt that this is the best of them all. We've booked our 6th visit for next year and will continue to return each year.
The food is as good as, if not better than any top restaurant in London. The service is unbelievable - nothing is too much trouble. The kids club (first time we've used it) is second to none, including the babysitting service. The spa is great too.
The villas on the beaches are so private and rarely see other guests. It is worth noting that the resort isn't for those looking for a lively holiday, although there are several bars which remain open till late. Highly recommend the private beach dining experience under the stars. Very expensive but highly enjoyable and a nice romantic touch to your partner!

EVERYTHING in this place is spectacular. Although VERY expensive, this place however exceeded our expectations in EVERYTHING they provided. NOTHING was average or below average. The SPA was simply a continuous journey of pleasant surprises, the room (water-villa) was also very comfortable, serene & peaceful. The beach is very clean & has beautiful sea-life. We were very blessed to have privacy as well. There were also life-guards roaming by the beach, as well as on a speedboat checking the area frequently. The food was delicious. The idea of having a villa host just added to the quality of the place. Christina was our host, and she was GREAT. She definitely elevated the quality of our stay. We literally had to worry about NOTHING. She even took care of unpacking/packing our bags! Everyone working here had great courtesy. I got sick on my first two days, they managed to reschedule our plans, as well as bring us medicine (according to doctor's prescription) for free. We appreciated that. Two notes, pictures & stories don't do this place justice, its better than that. Secondly, it's expensive, but worth it.Read full review
